Last week during Hanukkah I decided to take my wife, mother and two children, one aged 11, and one 8 years old, to the Mount Herzl military cemetery. Before making Alliya, this was the place where I used to wander, looking at the graves and understanding how much the people of Israel have had to pay for securing their homeland. Each turn in Israel's short history has left so many young men and women having to sacrifice their lives for our freedom, and they are buried throughout the land in Israel's many military cemeteries. We stood by the graves of Herzl, the Rabin's and the the other leaders of Israel, including past presidents and prime ministers. The military cemetery holds so many of Israels fallen heroes, some famous like Yony Netanyahu and Hanna Senesh. It was the grave of Yoni that I wanted to show to my family but I couldn't find. When we exited the graves area, I asked a man if he knew where Netanyahus's grave was. His reply left me stunned, " I don't know where Yoni's grave is, but I know where my son's grave is". We talked for ages, tears pouring down the mans face. He lives in Eilat, but insisted his son be buried at Har Herzl, so that people like ourselves would visit and see how much a price Israel's young have paid. I shall never forget my visit on Hanukkah to the graves of Israel's brave soldiers, nor shall I ever forget that for every grave, each one holds a special hero, and for every hero a family is crying their hearts out, and in each family a father's heart is forever broken.
