My wife and I recently returned from 9 wonderful days in Ireland.
What helped to make the holiday so good was the planning beforehand. The flight was booked well in advance. A rental car was hired over the the Internet. Also, the first 2 nights' accommodation (Bed & Breakfast) in Dublin was booked in advance over the net. Incidentally, there are many sites on the net, giving loads of information regarding Ireland. In addition to this, we bought a good guide book on Ireland plus a touring road map, and made a provisional itinerary of where to go and what to see. In practice, we only made one change to this, and that was on a recommendation by one of the B & B owners where we stayed. We planned to stay in a different town every night, and had a list of about 5-6 B&B's in each of the next towns on our list, and phoned them around 12 noon on the day that we were going to that particular town in order to book a room - and this worked very well.
Upon arrival at Dublin airport, after exiting customs, it is worth while buying a phone card.
Dublin is a must. If you're travelling on buses, note that they only take coins, no notes, and don't give change. The open-top "Hop-on hop-off" bus tour is very good. A ticket is valid for 24 hours, and shows you much of the city. You can get off to visit places and then get on again later to go to more places.
Once you get out into the country, the scenery is beautiful, even stunning, especially on the western side, and the lakes around Killarney. Other places worth visiting are Blarney Castle - where you can kiss the mystical stone, the Waterford Crystal factory showroom, and Galway. But really all of Ireland is worth seeing.
We travelled 1400 km in 8 days, and although we saw a lot, there is much more to see.
Have a good trip.
